Hi fellow Africans, I welcome you to this edition of Africa Business Genius (ABG) Interview.
This is the medium we use to showcase Africans businesses and entrepreneurs who are doing well in the business world.
Today, I’m glad to introduce to you the CEO of the House of Henri Limited, a leading fashion company in Africa, Mrs. Henrietta Agboola.
You’re welcome Mrs. Henrietta.
Thank you. It’s a pleasure to talk to our African audience.
To start with, who is Henrietta Agboola and what is House of Henri Ltd all about?
I am the CEO and Creative Director at House of Henri Ltd. And I am also the Head of Faculty at Fashion and Art Academy. House of Henri is a company that is into the business of fashion and related ventures. The business units under House of Henri essentially comprise a Couture arm, a Ready-to-wear arm, and a Training and Capacity Building unit. 2gedaforever is our couture bridal arm. TooshmeHenri is our online fashion retail unit. Fashion and Art Academy is our training unit, which is complimented by Easylearncollege.com, a platform that offers the convenience of online training. I have won a number of awards including Nigeria Best Fashion Designer in 2005 and African Bridal Practitioners Association’s Creative Designer of the Year 2006, amongst others. I am the author of Garment Sewing Made Easy (Basic Course) and Jewelry Craft & Bead Stringing Made Easy. I am working on the sequels that should hopefully be published before the end of the year. I am happily married and am mother to 3 awesome children.
Thank you. We’re aware you’ve been on this journey since about 25 years, how smooth has it been?
It has not been a tea party at all. The Fashion business is not for lazy people. It is very demanding and sometimes challenging. But with hard work and God on our side, we are beginning to reap the harvest of years of sowing into diligence and honing our skills.
Hmmm. One major goal of your organization is to train the interested Africans to build a career or start a business in fashion industries, how far have you gone with this vision?
Since the inception of our training arm, now called Fashion and Art Academy 12 years ago, we have trained thousands of people. But we keep getting requests to open more training centers nationwide, which is an arduous task. But with the recent launch of www.easylearncollege.com, we are now able to provide self-paced training to people, where they want it and when they want it.
We’re aware that your collections have been exhibited and sold in many countries of the world which US, UK, Italy etc. are some of them, any secret behind this achievement?
As I mentioned earlier, hard work and diligence pays. Skillfulness in your trade will also earn you people’s confidence and recognition. That said, the most important secret is the God factor.
I read the testimony of one of your students who confessed of moving ahead fast in the fashion business because of the quality skills she acquired in your fashion school (Fashion $ Art Academy). Since when have you become a “fashion teacher”?
I have been into training since my university days, but formally for 12 years now.
We’re aware of your various awards as Best Fashion Designer of the year, Creative Designer of the year, Official Fashion Designer for the re-branding of the Lux Beauty Soap, which of these awards makes you proud the most and why?
Every award comes with its own joy because it is another evidence that people recognize the excellence of your work. However, the Best Fashion Designer of the Year award represented a turning point in my career.
Lastly, what will you advise many Africans who are reading this interview and will love to acquire skills as fashion designer?
I will tell them to come to Fashion and Art Academy or register for our online classes at easylearncolege.com if you truly want to acquire professional skills. However, they must note that the fashion business is for hardworking people. If you are not ready to work long hours and keep vigils to meet customer’s orders, you had better consider another profession. The good news is that fashion will always be because people will forever have need to wear clothes. The opportunities to explore to make money are many. You also need to be able to pay attention to detail. Finally, I would counsel you be yourself, be original, don’t be a photocopy.
Please, can we have your Academy’s address and phone number to contact you?
You can get full information about the academy at www.fashionandartacademy.com and www.easylearncollege.com. Mails can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org
