Over the years I have learned so many things in the business world.
Some of these lessons came as experience while some came as knowledge, from reading of hundreds of good business books.
This one I’m about to share with you came as knowledge, I applied it, so today I can call it wisdom.
What is that?
In the business world, don’t sruggle to be the best, strive to be the first.
I know that doesn’t sound like anything you can take serious, right?
Think about this;
MTN is not the king today in the Nigerian telecom industry because they are the best.
They are the king because they are the first.
Some will argue and ask me, but isn’t MTN network the best?
Well, not until 3-5 years after they have been the first.
If you consider how much preparation Eticelat brought to the market, the millions of dollars they spent on marketing, etc, with what MTN brought to the market, then, you’ll understand what I’m saying here.
Think about the first bank of Nigeria (which was actually the first bank to get to Nigeria, since 1894).
For many decades, first bank of Nigeria was the king in the Nigerian banking sector. Even today when the likes of GTB, Zenith are working hard and winning some battles, first bank still remains the Nigerian bank with stongest capital base.
Being the first may lead you to being the best, but being the best is not likely to lead you to being the king in the market.
So if you have option between the best and the first, choose being the first.
Being the first in a certain industry is certainly not easy, but it’s possible with the right business education.
I’m talking here about business strategy.
It’s all about being strategic.
