Sometimes ago I was discussing with an elder friend of mine.
He is the owner and proprietor of a school and he had about 12 employees.
We sat down together to talk about his school and how we could make it more profitable.
Guess one of those things he was planning so as to have a more lucrative business?
He told me, “This xxx will be sacked in the next three weeks or so”.
I asked him, “Have you informed her about your plan (to sack her)?”
He answered, “NO”
He as well told me about someone he planed to sack soon (probably in the next 3 months) and another lady he was planning to sack (maybe in the next one year or so, depending on whenever he fund a chance to do so).
Now think about this.
His employees never knew about this plans.
They think they had a job, while their employer has already mapped out how he would send them off his business.
Few months after our discussion, my elder friend carried out his plan and sacked those marked employees.
Do you say this is evil?
But you see, you never can tell what your employer is planning against you, except you’re indispensable in his business.
There are indispensable employees.
Their employers cannot do without them or it’s very difficult to do without them.
Such employees hold the pillars of the business or they are contributing to the progress of their employers` business in such way nobody else can.
If you think you’re indispensable to your employer or the organization you’re working for, then you’re save.
If otherwise, you never can tell what your employer is planning against you.
I’m telling you this because I’m an employer.
I employ people and fire too, if I have reason to do so.
But it’s also the truth. As an entrepreneur, one of the things we were trained to do is to employ and to fire.
I’m very sorry. Entrepreneurs rarely see firing employees as a bad thing.
You simply can’t tell what your employer is planning for you!
In the year 2014 or so, the management of Intercontinental bank (One of the then top banks in Nigeria) decided to sack some staff in a particular branch where I had someone working.
All they did was to send an email and/or a phone call.
“Mr. XXX and Mrs YRK is sacked!”
I need to ask you something.
Do you think the management of that bank just made the decision to sack those employees that afternoon?
I tell you the truth, they might have planned it a year before.
You simply cannot tell what you employer is planning, unfortunately.
A man called me around last year and told me a very pathetic story.
The day was Friday and he prepared and went to work (as usual).
The boss simply called him to his office and announced, “Thank you Mr. XYZ. Your service is no longer needed here”
You just can’t tell what your employer is planning for you!
That’s why I laughed whenever I hear an employee saying, “The reason why I can’t start a business is because I have no capital”
They give excuses to make themselves happy.
When you’re sacked, what would you do?
Someone I know very well left his growing business to get a job (Imagine this crazy society where everyone loves job!)
10 years after he had been employed, he was fired.
He went back to point zero.
I’m not telling you the story I saw in a movie. I’m telling you the real life story of someone I know very closely.
I don’t know maybe something is wrong with me, but I always find myself thinking against what everyone thinks.
I mean, independence is the number one thing everyone should FIGHT for.
Don’t give any fucking excuse about it.!
I mean, I can’t imagine being an employee for 30 years. I can’t!
You mean, someone will just call me into his office one Thursday afternoon, after working for him 10 years, and ask me to go home?
What would I tell my wife at home?
What would you tell your children?
These are some of the things I thought about when I was going to the business world.
I didn’t have money and my family didn’t want me to go into the business world, but I knew within myself that it would be better for me to DIE than to work for another man for 30 years.
I mean it.
If you give me the options between working (even for the Central Bank of Nigeria) for 30 years or DIE today, I’ll simply smile and ask you, “Where is the gun?”
I can’t live my life in poverty. No, I can’t!
I can’t live my life worshiping people I don’t respect (because they give me nonsense thing call salary)
I can’t live my life in uncertainty. No. I can’t.
That was the reason why I decided to build my own company, DO-OR-DIE.
The reason why most people can’t start businesses and make it successful today is because they are not crazy enough.
They simply sit down somewhere I give an unintelligent excuse, “I don’t have capital”
These people don’t know ANYTHING and they are not willing to learn
I went fully into the business world on Thursday, 24th of July, 2008 (after I have spent about 10 years on part-time businesses)
That Thursday morning I had about #8,500 (less than $50) with me and I lost all that money withing 5 days.
So, fifth day after I went to the business world, I was with almost ZERO money.
But I decided to rather DIE than to work for a bank.
I was just willing to build a business or DIE trying.
Here I am today.
What do you think I usually think each time someone tells me, “the reason why I’m an employee is because I have no capital”?
I laugh or cry.
I laugh if I think they are babes. I cry if I think they are ignorant.
If you are busy making yourself happy by giving yourself an excuse, one day you’ll lose your job or retire poor.
In each case, people run to business.
I usually cry when I see them.
When people lose their jobs, what do they do?
They find a way to start their own business.
When people retire poor, what do they do?
They start business.
Isn’t that very funny?
The lesson is; There is no three ways to life.
If you fail to go to the war, the war will come and meet you at home.
Which is better?
Going to the war or having war (suddenly) meet you when you’re asleep?
If you continue making excuses, if you think you don’t have capital and you don’t take time to learn from people who know how to get capital, one day, you’ll lose your job or retire poor.
By then, you’ll be left with no option but it might have been too late for you.
Stop giving excuses.
Stop complaining about political leaders.
You’re simply keeping yourself on the ground.
Be willing to learn and act.
Be crazy enough to dare life and get something out of your life.
I really wish I can help few Africans but that has to be ONLY very serious ones.
How I wish I could meet you and coach you one-on-one
But you see, I’m very busy.
There’s no easy way for you to get in touch with me.
You cannot find me on Facebook (except our company’s profile which you’re not sure you’ll reach me).
You cannot find me on WhatApp. You cannot find me on Twitter, Instagram or any social media.
In fact, total numbers of people who have my personal phone number (who can call me today directly) are NOT up to 100.
So, you and I may never have any opportunity to see or be together.
The only option you have is the Africa Business University (A.B.U)
In the university, I took my time to take you by the hand, show you how I started, got capital and build my own company and how you can do the same.
Many Africans are already at the Africa Business University and their testimonies give me hope that Africa can actually become better.
I hope to see a continent of great people.
I hope to see a continent of ambitious people.
I hope to see a continent of people who will stop complaining and do something great with their lives.
I wish to see a continent of men and women who don’t make excuses.
